At a recent luncheon, Long Island breast cancer non-profit The Maurer Foundation was awarded ,500 in proceeds from the 12th annual LI2Day Walk. The funds will help support the Maurer Foundation’s mission of educating young Long Island women and men on the importance of breast cancer prevention and early detection.
More than $400,000 was raised at this year’s LI2Day Walk on June 13. The walk followed a 13.1-mile scenic route in and around Smith Point Park, and concluded with a lunch and celebratory march with breast cancer survivors across the Smith Point Bridge.
As part of the LI2Day Walk donation program, the Maurer Foundation organized a team of 15 walkers and approximately 12 volunteers to participate and help raise funds in the two-day event.
Since its inception in 2004, the LI2Day Walk has raised over $6 million for Long Island breast cancer non-profits. The organization’s motto is “What’s Raised Here, Stays Here,” and the funds awarded to the Maurer Foundation will directly support breast health education on Long Island.
The Maurer Foundation presents free educational programs to high schools and community groups throughout Long Island. The workshops focus on breast cancer prevention, including reducing risk factorsAnything that increases or decreases a person’s chance of developing a disease. by adopting healthy diet and exercise routines. Attendees also learn about the crucial step of early detection, including how to conduct breast self-exams.
The Maurer Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and has reached over 280,000 individuals with the life-saving message of breast cancer prevention and early detection. Schools, community groups, and businesses are welcome to request a breast health program and the Maurer Foundation gratefully accepts donations.
