The Maurer Foundation’s 18th Annual Golf Classic, held at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, NY, was a swinging success, selling out all of it’s golf tickets and raising over $150,000 in support of Long Island breast health.
This was the first year that the charity golf outing, held Thursday, May 9th, 2013, took place in the spring. Although the event began with rain, the warm weather, along with the tie-in to Mother’s Day, made the occasion even more enjoyable and meaningful than usual.
The day kicked off with brunch, shortly followed by a shotgun signaling the start of golf. The game went beyond a typical round on the course–a “Beat the Pro” contest was held at the 9th hole, and Hole-in-One contests at the 6th, 9th and 16th holes, tempting golfers with extravagant prizes that included a two-year lease to a 2013 Mercedes, a set of irons, a golf vacation at a selected Fairmont resort and $10,000 in cash.
After a day of friendly competition, guests enjoyed cocktails on the terrace and later, an award reception featuring Master of Ceremonies John Schmitt, former Jet and Super Bowl champion. The Leif Arntzen Quartet performed live music and various auction and raffle results were announced.
The Golf Classic live auction featured gifts such as golf clubs and lessons, restaurant gift certificates, Yankees, Mets and Jets tickets and much more. Silent Auction prizes included golf gift cards, museum passes, an East End weekend getaway, Belmont Park race seating and many other extraordinary items. The grand prize, a Samsung 43” flat screen TV, was awarded to Richard McGovern.
To commemorate Mother’s Day, a number of mom-themed gift baskets were among the 29 total packages that were raffled off. With Golf Classic falling just a few days prior to Mother’s Day, attendees took the opportunity to win something extra for the women in their lives. Gifts included massages, salon visits, restaurant gift cards, handbags, tennis equipment, fitness training sessions and jewelry, among other exquisite prizes. As an event that supports breast health and plays a role in saving women’s lives, this year’s Golf Classic had an even greater meaning as it served as an opportunity to give back to moms for Mother’s Day.
The proceeds from the charity golf outing will benefit The Maurer Foundation’s life-saving breast health education programs. The Foundation, which has reached hundreds of thousands of people since it’s inception in 1995, offers breast health presentations to communities, businesses, and schools. Covering topics that are essential in breast cancer prevention and early detection, Maurer Foundation educators explain risk factors, myths, healthy lifestyle information and early detection strategies including how to conduct breast self-exams and when to schedule mammograms. The Golf Classic is just one of several fundraising initiatives that the not-for-profit organization coordinates each year in order to support and sustain its life-saving efforts.
