Our History
Our vision is that every youth and young adult completes breast health education and takes actions to prevent breast cancer.
History & Founder
Our founder, Dr. Virginia E. Maurer, MD is a nationally recognized leader in the field of breast surgery and breast health education. A graduate of Queen’s University School of Medicine in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, she is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. She has been a member of the Society for the Study of Breast Disease, the American Medical Women’s Association, and the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group.
A staunch proponent of breast cancer awareness, Dr. Maurer discovered that many women lacked access to pertinent and current information about breast health. Responding to the need in her own practice, Dr. Maurer first made breast health education programs available to her patients and their families. The success of these programs encouraged her to reach out to the general public, but particularly to adolescents through high school presentations. Dr. Maurer believes that the choices we make early in life can affect our future breast health. Since 1995, The Maurer Foundation has been serving the community as a separate not-for-profit organization. From reaching just over a thousand people in that first year, the organization has continued to broaden our capacity reaching hundreds of thousands. Through diverse partnerships we educate the public, striving toward our goal to be recognized as the leading source of current and accurate breast health information. Dr. Maurer remains active in her role as Founder, Board Member, motivator and an inspiration.
