ali_skubik_cookies_for_a_causeAli Skubik saw her bat mitzvah as much more than a celebration—she took this meaningful event as an opportunity to make a difference by fundraising for breast health. The generous teen raised $500 for The Maurer Foundation after successfully selling pink and white Cookies for a Cause. We can’t thank Ali enough for her efforts and support of our life-saving mission.

Inspired by family members, Ali selected this fundraiser for her mitzvah project, a good deed for the Jewish coming-of-age ceremony. Because both her grandmother and great-grandmother were breast cancer survivors and after witnessing her sister Samantha’s success in selling Cookies for a Cause last year, Ali sought out to support the initiative herself. She sold 250 cookies for $2 each and at the same time, helped to raise awareness for breast health. Ali will describe her experience at her Bat Mitzvah on March 8, 2014!

Ali’s mother, Jill Skubik, explained, “Ali chose The Maurer Foundation because her ‘Grammy’ is a breast cancer survivor and it is a cause that is very close to our hearts. The Maurer Foundation is such an important organization and I hope that fundraising such as Ali’s mitzvah project helps you to continue to educate young women about the importance of breast health education.”

The Maurer Foundation Executive Director Debbie Hecht expressed gratitude, stating, “We are truly grateful that Ali chose to support The Maurer Foundation as her mitzvah project. It’s wonderful when young people recognize the importance of being educated on the ways they can be proactive with their breast and overall health.”

Ali’s contribution will help fund the foundation’s breast health education programs. The presentations cover important topics related to breast cancer including risk factorsmyths, precautionary measures, breast self-exam techniques, mammogram guidelines and much more. Through these programs, the foundation is able to provide women with the knowledge that can help lead to early detection and as a result, save lives.
