The Maurer Foundation is very proud to partner with The North Shore Middle School in support of their Penny Wars competition to help fight the war on breast cancer. Each year the North Shore Middle School’s 7th grade class puts their school spirit on full display when they compete in their annual Team Challenge, which includes an Academic Bowl, Athletic Bowl, and a Lip Sync Contest. The Penny Wars competition, tirelessly organized by teacher, Ro Fillone, was started a few years back when an inventive 8th grader saw an opportunity to incorporate a charitable fundraising activity into the Team Challenge. The idea is simple, yet wildly fun, each team puts pennies in their own buckets to earn points, but can put silver coins and dollars in other teams’ buckets to subtract points.
This competition is also a deeply personal mission for the North Shore Middle School community, as with all Long Island communities, their connection to breast cancer became very real when two beloved teachers began battling the disease. The 7th graders decided that The Maurer Foundation would be the perfect organization to work with to combat breast cancer.
In past years the 7th graders of NSMS raised a total of almost $1000, but this year these amazing students raised over $1300! The Maurer Foundation is proud and truly grateful for the extraordinary work of all these hardworking students. According to Dr. Marc Ferris, principal of the North Shore Middle School, “The North Shore Middle School community knows our students are capable of sheer greatness and their phenomenal work in the Penny Wars on behalf of The Maurer Foundation is further proof of their amazing ability to rally for a great cause.” The Maurer Foundation is so appreciative of the generous donation of these unstoppable students. It is due to their tireless efforts we are able to continue serving the Long Island community and educating women about breast health.
