Lax for ME & the GALS, a girls lacrosse tournament that benefited both the Maurer Foundation and the Girls Athletic League of Smithtown (GALS), was a great success, raising funds in support of our breast health education programs as well as the GALS initiatives. The Foundation was honored to be part of this athletic event, which promoted physical activity – a lifestyle choice known to help reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Held on October 27, 2013 at Smithtown High School in St. James, this friendly all-day lacrosse competition drew an attendance of approximately 300 people in support of our life-saving mission along with girls’ sports. Approximately 20 lacrosse teams enthusiastically participated, with players—who ranged in age from grades 4-12—receiving Maurer Foundation backpacks as souvenirs. The Foundation also provided pink and white cookies and pink ribbon wristbands that were sold at the event along with T-shirts imprinted with our logo.
The Maurer Foundation has shared critical information with over 200,000 women to date, in large part thanks to the support of fundraisers such as this. Presentations that are brought to schools, colleges, businesses and community organizations focus on everything from breast cancer myths to examinations. The Foundation’s programs explain the steps in conducting breast self-exams, an important element in early detection.
“Our goal is to make women aware of the facts regarding breast cancer and early detection, and it is just as important for girls and teens to know about the preventative measures they can take now, such as exercising and getting proper nutrition,” stated Maurer Foundation Executive Director Debbie Hecht. “We are thankful to have had the opportunity to participate in this action-packed day and appreciate the efforts of the volunteers, school representatives, guests, fans and of course the players.”
