June 22, 2010 marked the Kick-off Event for the 1st Annual Long Island Wellness  Challenge, presented by Action Long Island and the American Heart Association.  The event was held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY.

The Long Island Wellness Challenge will encourage people to focus on being healthier and fit by participating in a vigorous, exciting corporate competition.  The Maurer Foundation is providing lunch and learn sessions for companies participating in the Wellness Challenge.  We had a table at the Kick-Off Event, where we met several companies who already signed up for a lunch and learn with our foundation. We were also able to share what our foundation is all about, and share critical information on the benefits of screening, breast self examination and risk reduction of breast cancer.

Bob Nystrom, former NHL Player for the NY Islanders, and Susan Somerville, Executive Director of North Shore University Hospital spoke at the Kick-Off.  Susan Somerville presented an effective slide show on the rise in obesity in America over the past 30 years.  The increase in numbers was startling.

We are thrilled to be a part of the Long Island Wellness Challenge, in helping people live healthier, happier and longer.
