On September 1, the Long Island Ducks hit a home run for breast health awareness! The Maurer Foundation joined our hometown baseball team for their 10th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night, and reached hundreds of Ducks fans at a lively evening at Bethpage Ballpark.

Our educators staffed a table at the game, distributing information and answering questions on breast cancer prevention and early detection.

The Ducks’ Breast Cancer Awareness Night included more than 20 local organizations, and we were proud to be among them sharing life-saving information with the public and cheering on our home team. Our Executive Director Susan Samaroo was even among the organization representatives invited to throw out the first pitch of the game! The Ducks themselves wore commemorative pink jerseys and hats, which were included in a fundraising auction.

The first 1,500 fans to arrive at Bethpage Ballpark for the game were given commemorative pink T-shirts, and the evening concluded with a post-game fireworks show. The Ducks also provided the Maurer Foundation with free tickets, which we gladly gave to our hard-working volunteers and their friends and family as a thank you for their invaluable contributions.

Breast cancer awareness is near and dear to the Ducks’ founder and CEO Frank Boulton. As he described in a welcome letter distributed at the game, “Over thirty years ago my mother, Dorothy Boulton, lost her battle with breast cancer. As a husband and father of two daughters, I know the importance of breast cancer awareness.”

Our staff members and volunteers had a wonderful time sharing the ways young Long Island women and men can make healthy choices to impact breast cancer risk factors. Many thanks to the Long Island Ducks for raising breast health awareness and supporting the Maurer Foundation!
