In a continuous effort to bring the latest breast health information to community members, The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education (TMF) is pleased to announce the first installment in its 2006/2007 Breast Health Connections Lecture Series. The lecture, “Breast Intentions: What You and Your Mother Should Know About Breast Cancer,” is set for Tuesday, October 17, 2006 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm in the Top of Hillwood Commons at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY.
TMF has partnered with C.W. Post’s Student Life and Leadership Development Office, The School of Health Professions and Nursing and The Long Island Women’s Institute to offer this free educational seminar on breast cancer development, diagnosis, and treatment. As part of the seminar, attendees will have an opportunity to participate in an interactive learning session that teaches breast self examination techniques on high fidelity silicone breast models. An open forum for questions will take place at the conclusion of the lecture.
Jeff Picarello, Director of Public Affairs at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory will be one of the guest speakers for the evening. Mr. Picarello will provide his expert insight on how breast cancer develops as well as the geneticInherited characteristics. solutions for diagnosing and treating breast cancer. He will also discuss future hopes for managing cancer. A Certified Maurer Foundation Breast Health Educator will present the second portion of the program, which will focus on risk reduction and the early detection of breast cancer.

Jeff Picarello is Director of Public Affairs at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, one of the nation’s leading basic research institutions and a National Cancer Institute Basic Research Center. There, he is responsible for communicating news of the breakthrough cancer research to the lay public and for working with the many grassroots fundraising organizations that support the work of Cold Spring Harbor’s 350 scientists.
The lecture commences at 6:30 pm and ends at 8:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Attendees will also have an opportunity to enter into a free raffle to win a gift basket valued at $500, courtesy of Orpheus Salon & Spa in Cold Spring Harbor. The gift basket contains assorted hair and skincare products, jewelry, and a gift certificate for a “Day of Beauty”. The “Day of Beauty” includes hair color and cut, blow-dry and a manicure.
